Maui has been photographed millions of times by millions of people. But rarely has “the world’s favorite island” been pictured as memorably as it is here.
Whether shooting from air, land or sea, veteran isle photographer Douglas Peebles reveals an island as multi-faceted as an emerald. Here are dramatic landscapes and seascapes. Smoldering sunrises and sunsets. Rainbows as airy as the trade winds that carry them.
But these are not just posterquality pictures. Each image conveys a particular mood, a time of day or night, an indelible sense of place.
Readers will travel along with Peebles and copy writer Tom Stevens through five districts of this remarkable island. Central Maui, with its picturesque towns, surf breaks and sugar fields. West Maui, a gold coast of resorts and royal history. South Maui, where whales cruise past stunning sunsets. Upcountry, with its family farms and mighty volcanic crater. And the rugged, verdant Hāna Coast, the most Hawaiian region of all.
This is clearly evident in these new photos of Maui.
The composite portrait of Maui that emerges should speak to a broad spectrum of readers; to longtime islanders, new residents and visitors alike. This is more than a souvenir. It is an expression of a photographer’s aloha for a very special place.
