Recipients of the 2011 Ka Palapala Po’okela book awards were announced on May 6, 2011 at the ceremony held on the grounds of the Mission Houses Museum. This marks the 18th year for the awards, which are presented by the Hawaii Book Publishers Association (HBPA) to recognize the finest books published during the previous year and to honor individuals involved in their creation.
The number of entries continued to reflect the strength of the local book-publishing industry, with a total of 76 nominations entered in thirteen categories.
These were narrowed down to two certificate awards given in each category, as determined by the votes of the Hawaii Book Academy. The academy is a group formed specifically to judge these awards and includes librarians, booksellers, educators, publishing and media professionals, and other dedicated book lovers.
